NATIONAL SCIENCE DAY PROGRAM

The seminar series will have two parts. The first part will be broadcast over Doordarshan Bangla in Bengali from 15:00 to 16:00 and second part will be over YouTube in English from 16:30 to 17:30:

Sustainable Curiosity 15:00 - 15:20 | Doordarshan Bangla

We will cover why science is important and how to keep curiosity alive since childhood irrespective of gender to practice science.

Speakers: Mukulika Jana Chatterjee (a mother and PhD scholar Shivpur), Dr Moumita Ghosh (PhD IISc-Bengaluru and Scientist at Thermo Fisher Scientific, Eindhoven, The Netherlands), Dr Sumantra Pal (PhD Heidelberg, Advisor and Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Women and Child Development, The Government of India) and supported by Dr Varsha Pavithran (Public Health Officer, Oral Health Expert and MDS)

Brain Science 15:20 - 15:40 | Doordarshan Bangla

This seminar will cover a scientific aspect of brain from the aspect of neurotechnology and nanotechnology

Speaker: Dr Samit Chakrabarti (PhD Cambridge and Lecturer University of Leeds) and chaired by Dr Siddharth Ghosh (PhD Goettingen, German Research Foundation Fellow Cambridge, and Director of International Center for Nanodevices).

Science is facts

15:40 to 16:00 | Doordarshan Bangla

Good scientific practice develops a strong foundation of an individual and society. While empowering the public, we should not neglect that scientific investigation is the collection of data and calculations. Acknowledging artifacts or incorrect findings does not make any scientific findings less appealing. Presenting scientific findings to anyone needs a mathematical approach of universal and honest communication. In the process of beautification and aesthetic data representation, misleading or exaggeration may lead to irreparable damages to society.

Flow of the session: Science in literature and comments of Satyajit Ray on unavailability of details; scientific investigation; scientific reporting; and developing trust on science.

Speaker: Everyone in panel

A Pragmatic Approach to Writing Research Papers 17:30 to 18:30 | YouTube Live

Much has been written about how to write good research papers. But there is a need to discuss it from time to time. Writing is a necessity for researchers to publish their work in reputed journals and well-attended conferences as well as to prepare winning grant proposals. However, it is increasingly becoming an even more important task than doing the research itself. Intense competition in securing grants and publishing papers underscores the need to write well to put forth one’s ideas effectively. By taking a few good tips from a selected set of essays on “how to write about research”, we will discuss a pragmatic approach that makes writing pleasurable and rewarding.

Speaker: Prof GK Ananthasuresh (PhD Michigan, Bhatnagar Laureate, Professor of Mechanical Engineering and the Dean of Mechanical Sciences at IISc-Bengaluru) and chaired by Dr Siddharth Ghosh (PhD Goettingen, German Research Foundation Fellow and The Royal Society of Exceptional Talent, University of Cambridge)
