Call for 2022-23 Mentors

Open Academic Research Winter Workshop 2022-23
Open Academic Research is pleased to announce the 2022 edition of the winter camp after the pandemic linked hiatus, after three highly successful winter camps between 2017 - 2019. As usual, we aim to set-up a camp close to nature for a week during winter holidays. The Creative Thinkers (CT) join us with an open research question presented as a proposal and they will find a solution/s either single-handedly or as a group effort under the supervision of respective mentor(s). Our role as OAR mentors would be to guide them along their way with an open scientific mind.
To get an overview of the workshop and research projects from last years’ edition, please follow the link: https://www.openacademicresearch.org/program/research-workshops
Call for OAR Mentors: We seek mentors for guiding at least two projects related to their research field. You should be open to scientific curiosity, questions or critical review and debates, including willingness to participate in arguments and criticism. Possibly even learn something new from your CTs.
Qualifications: Mentors should have a Ph.D. (with at least a year’s experience)/Academicians (Science, Medical, Business, Social Science, Theatre, Arts & Literature, Humanities, Athletics, Design Thinking, etc.) with at least five years of research experience and a good understanding of their subject.
Motivations: As a mentor you will help identify the research problem at hand, understand the CT’s methodology, and help them gain the skill-set needed to address the problem. Once you are an OAR mentor, we request you spend time with your CT apprentices to help chalk out a plan towards the solution. The mentor should guide CTs in achieving the best outcome of the project, often leading to innovation and intellectual property (IP).
Expectations from mentor: Mentors are expected to design and develop a manageable work plan with the CTs. This includes pre-workshop preparations towards the research project, activities needing to be executed during the workshop and continuing the work during the post-workshop period. This plan should be submitted and discussed with the OAR panel before the 15th of November 2022.
Pre-workshop supervision period is expected to be of a minimum of 2-4 hours per week, at least for a period of 1 month. This time period, of course, depends on the project topic/design and is flexible for mentors to select, after discussion with the OAR panel.
During the workshop:
A mentor is expected to be present at the workshop to supervise and execute the planned activities towards the research project outcome. At the camp, you will regularly interact with your CTs in an organized manner and monitor your CTs’ progress. At the end of the workshop, CTs are expected to submit a preliminary report of the project and present it before the entire OAR panel.
During the workshop, the mentor is also expected to give a presentation about their own research interests.
Post-workshop activities last for a minimum of 9 months. During this period, mentors are required to supervise, monitor the status of the research project and update the OAR panel on a monthly basis (by the 3rd day of each month). Expected supervision time is a minimum of 2-4 hours per week. At the end of this period, mentor and CT are expected to be in a position to submit their work for publication/patenting.
OAR Winter workshop details: Our camps being close to nature means possibilities of frequent hikes and sporting activities, which the mentors are often expected to lead the way. We intend to provide travel, camping facilities, accommodation and food for mentors. If you think you have the above qualities and would like to make a positive change in the education system we grew up in, you are urged to join us as OAR members. Please submit the completed registration form. The call for mentors closes on the 15th of September 2022.
OAR membership: If you agree with the principles and work of OAR and wish to become an OAR member, you should be self-motivated to spend about an hour per week during the year to continue providing your valued input to CTs and assist in preparing the upcoming events for OAR. During the event organizing period, OAR mentors are required to meet (virtually or in-person) for an hour at a pre-agreed time and are expected to be actively involved in organizing the annual winter camp.
